Volleyball is a famous team sport where two teams of six players compete. In this sport, players use their hands to hit the ball over a high net into the opponent’s field. It is necessary to have adequate equipment, such as a playing field of the correct size, to play this game. What is the standard dimension of a volleyball court?
What are the Volleyball Court Dimensions?
Indoor volleyball court:
The first thing to remember is that in indoor volleyball, the measurements remain the same whether you play international, college or club volleyball.
But the court dimensions for the high school are slightly different.
International, College & Club Volleyball Courts
The official indoor volleyball court size in US units of measurement is 29’6 or 29 feet six inches for the half-court area.
If you were using the metric system, the half-court area is 9 meters by 9 meters, while the full court is 18 meters long by 9 meters wide. Many people like to round these numbers to 30 feet by 60 feet, but the precise measurements are what I listed.
High School Volleyball court
The official high school volleyball court dimensions are 29 feet 6 inches wide and 59 feet long. This is a total area of 1,743 square feet.
In addition to the playing area, your court design must include a safe zone around the perimeter.
What are the dimensions of an outdoor/beach volleyball court?
In outdoor volleyball competitions, the court size used to be the same as the indoor court, measuring 30 by 60 feet, with beach measurements.
However, in 2001, the FIVB made a controversial decision to reduce the size of the outdoor volleyball court to 16 meters in length and 8 meters in width.
These measurements apply to both men’s and women’s games.
The AVP (the Association of Volleyball Professionals) followed suit a year later.
This decision aimed to make the beach game more exciting, faster, and competitive for TV audiences. The same reasoning that led to the introduction of the libero position in indoor volleyball was applied to outdoor volleyball – TV audiences worldwide preferred defensive play rather than just power play, which was traditionally a men’s trademark.
The depth of the sand on the court must be at least 30 centimetres.
Sitting Volleyball court
In sitting volleyball, the official size of the court is 10 meters by 6 meters.
Nine-Man Volleyball Court Measurements
The court size and dimensions for the nine-man volleyball are 33 feet long and 33 feet wide. The net is tallest at 7 feet 8.5 inches tall.
Volleyball Court Lines
The volleyball court is divided by a net and is delimited by lines, areas and game marks. These lines determine the measurements of the volleyball field, which is rectangular with dimensions of 18 by 9 meters. In addition, to the volleyball court measurements, we must add the free zone, which occupies an area of 3.5 meters on each of the four sides.
Among the main lines of a volleyball court include: Quadra Line, Center Line and Attack Line. These divide the game zones, including the free, attack, defence, and turning zones.
There are two sidelines and two bottom lines that limit the volleyball court.
Quadra Line:
This line surrounds the entire court and marks the limits of where the ball is in play. This means that if the ball touches the ground outside these lines, the team that last touched it gives a point to win to the opposing team since it was sent out of the volleyball court.
Center Line:
The court is divided into two halves, being cut in length by the centre line. In this way, it is possible to define which part of the volleyball field belongs to one team or the other. In addition, it also serves as a guide to align the network.
Attack Line:
There are two lines parallel to the centre line, whose distances are 3 meters from the centre line to each side of the volleyball court. The reason for this volleyball line is to separate the attack area from the defence area. Therefore, this line indicates the prohibited area where defenders cannot step and send the ball to the other half of the volleyball court. However, players in defensive positions may jump before that line and bunt the volleyball above the net’s height while it is suspended in the air.
Volleyball Net Height
The net’s height is indicated in the attached table and measured from the centre of the volleyball field. The height above the two sidelines must be the same and not exceed the official volleyball height by more than 2 cm. The net of the volleyball field has different measurements in men’s volleyball, depending on the age categories. Therefore, the measures in the male categories are:
● Children: 2.24 meters.
● Cadets: 2.43 meters.
The measures in the female category are:
● Children: 2.10 meters.
● Cadets: 2.24 meters.
What are the colours of a Volleyball court?
A Volleyball court has several predetermined colours that can vary.
The playing area is usually orange, green or brown (if made of wood), and the free area can be green, blue or orange.
Now, if you are going to practice Volleyball in an amateur way, the basic thing you will need is a wide field with a net approximately 2 meters high.

What are the dimensions of the attack line?
The attack line, also known as the 3-meter line or 10-foot line, is located 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches) from the net. This line is crucial for regulating where players can perform attacks from.
How much space is required around a volleyball court?
It’s recommended to have a minimum clearance of at least 3 meters (10 feet) around the court to ensure players’ safety and proper gameplay.
Can the court dimensions be adjusted for younger players?
Yes, for younger players, the court dimensions can be modified. Mini-volleyball courts have smaller dimensions to suit the players’ physical capabilities and skill levels.
Are there specific dimensions for the volleyball court boundary lines?
The boundary lines are generally 5 centimetres (2 inches) wide. These lines outline the court and determine whether the ball is in or out.
Do the dimensions of the court affect gameplay?
Yes, Accurate court dimensions are essential for fair play and maintaining the game’s integrity. Proper court dimensions ensure that the net height, attack line, and boundaries are consistent for all players.
